TRAINING CAMP REPORT TUESDAY MORNING AUGUST 2, 2005
by Jerry Gilbert
Another very hot day in Green Bay. Candidates to run back punts and
kick-offs showed up early and caught high kicks from the machine. As is
common, Antonio Chatman was the first to arrive and he was followed by
Vince Butler, who seems to be rated by the staff as one of the top free
agent types with a chance for the practice squad. As others arrived, the
coaches added a twist. The player holds a ball in one hand a catches the
kick with the other. Butler only caught about 3 out of every 4 in his
first opportunity.
Terrence Murphy was next and he seemed very confident and caught every
one. For a reason unknown to me at this time, Murphy did not take part in
the remainder of the practice. Running back Chaz Williams steeped in had
had some trouble fielding the kicks. Experienced college returner Craig
Bragg acted as if he had done the drill before and handled it with no
problem. Robert Ferguson pushed in front of Bragg and performed fairly
well., but dropped 2. Butler returned and dropped 2 right handed
catcheshe is left handed. Braggs was again close to perfect and Murphy
requested one more chance as well.
I turned my attention to tight ends. A guy named Humphrey joined the
group and is now wearing number 49. David Martin was with the group but
wearing shorts.
Players missing include Brady Poppinga, Martin. Jason Horton Andre
Thurman, Joey Thomas, Murphy and , of course Jackson and Franks I also
did not see Atlas Herrion.or Ahman green.
During basic wide receiver pitch and catch, each player caught each type
of pass once. However on a sideline drill, I was impressed when a coach
yelled "my bad" during Walker's unsuccessful turn. Javon then lined up
at the back of the line for a second opportunity. Donald Driver always
went first to show how it is done.
Quarterback to receiver with no defense drill, only Mc Hugh dropped an
easy one. Overall I am impressed with the skills of the young receivers.
They seem pretty quick and all catch with their hands. Some years, the
bottom receivers in camp have been pretty ugly pass catchers. That being
said, Vince Butler continued to struggle as practice continued, but later
on he developed some consistency
There was a drill at the far end with 9 defenders and no wide-outs for
the offense. The object was to run many formations and defensive
adjustments at full speed. The whistle was blown on most plays without a
pass being thrown. I suspect that filming is the nost important part of
this drill. Rodgers did have a nice completion to O'Sullivan. The QB's
split out when they were not passing
The team next divided into 3 offensive units and they ran an uncontested 2
minute offense down the field. I am a little surprised to see Grey
Ruegamer as the second string left guard while the rookie Junius Costen is
lined up on the right side. Ruegamer has seemed more like a right guard
type. Bedell and Barry are the tackles with Wells at center. The third
offensive line has Morley and Curtin at tackles and Whittiker and Joe
Hayes at guards. Chris White is the center. I suspect Herrion would fit
in there if healthy .
The second group of 3 wide receivers included Vince Butler, Craig Bragg
and Jamal Jones. A healthy Terrence Murphy would replace one of them.
Nall had the second unit the first time and Rodgers was with it the second
time.
11 on 11
Bodies were flying around with real hitting in the interior of the line.
Davenport swept right for a huge gain. That play has been working since
camp began. While I have seldom had a good view of exactly what is
happening in the line, I have to conclude that Matt O'Dwyer is creating
some space. He and Tauscher open many holes on that side.
Davenport then picked his way over right guard for about 4 yards. A sweep
left was stacked up, but Chaz Williams was very successful sweeping right
followed by no gain over left guard. I was not close enough to judge why
all this
happened as it did but I know that Matt O'Dwyer was lined up on
Cletidus Hunt, while Corey Williams was at the defensive right tackle.
The rinning success on the right side happened against both Kampman and
KGB who flip-flopped at least once.
Drill with quarterback and receivers against cornerbacks. The second and
third string wide receivers usually prevailed victimizing Ahmad Carroll,
Chris Day and Mike Hawkins. This is tough duty for a corner all alone,
but this battle was won by the offense.
D. J. Sanders hit punts and they were fairly long and very high. One was
a beauty-- way over the head of the return man.
11on 11 For some reason Mark Roman was a safety with the first unit
rather than Freeman.
Favre under center
Pass to Ben Steele on the right side Davenport appeared to break free
with a run over left guard. completion to Ferguson on the right side.
Fisher runs left and gains. Favre sacked.
Craig Nall threw a nice pass to jamal Jones who dropped it. Fisher ran
right sithe success. the second defensive lie is Truluck and Peterson at
ends and Lee and Cole at tackles. An end around by Bragg was stuffed.
Rodgers entered He hit Bragg underneath. an end around did not work.
Favre returned.
On a fly pattern left Leigh Torrence had great coverage and a mighta
coulda chance at the INT. Nick Barnett got home on a blitz. A pass to
Chatman netted 7 and then Davenport broke through probably for a score on
an inside handoff from the shotgun.
O'Sullivan tried the inside handoff and Chaz Wlliams was stuffed QB finds
no one and scrambles
Rodgers tried an end around which did not work A screen to Henderson
netted about 12.
Favre returned for 7 on 7 otherwise known as no pass rush
Complete to Driver beating Carroll
Steele dropped a difficult but probably catchable ball behind him.
Chatman bveat Carroll up the left side.; Favre threw a perfect pass to
Walker that defeated excellent coverage by Harris Chatman caught one on the
right side.
Nall hit McHugh. Rodgers fired one that was popped into the air and
Hawkins intercepted.
Favre completed 2 to Chatman and Walker dropped an open fly pattern.

Rodgers threw a stirke to Butler, a defender stripped the ball but Butler
recovered it. The next play Harris was called for interference.
Favre returned and threw a dart; but Hawkins cut in front and almost
intercepted. From the shotgun he hit Fisher in stride for a nice gain. A
long pass to Ferguson was thwarted by the good coverage of Torrence. Vota
Leach had a chance and dropeed the pass. Dendy broke up a pass inteded for
Driver. Once again those 2 young corners made plays against the offensive
stars.

O'Sullivan hit Bragg for 8 yards and hit him again on a crossing pattern
